Do I need a robotic lawnmower?

Do I need a robotic lawnmower?

Every spring, many households in Latvia go through the same routine: weekends are spent pushing a mower, the grass grows faster than you'd like, and by the time you're back from holiday the lawn has turned into a meadow. A robotic lawn mower is no longer an expensive gadget. It's a practical helper that takes this job off your hands. But is it right for you? Let's take an honest look.

How does a robotic lawn mower work?

The robot mows often and a little at a time, rather than a lot once a week. The clippings are so fine that they stay on the lawn as natural fertiliser, so there's nothing to rake up or haul away. When the battery runs low, the robot returns to its charging station by itself and then carries on.

Older models need a boundary wire buried around the lawn. The latest generation of robots, such as the Hookii Neomow, work without a wire: they navigate using cameras and satellite positioning, and you can mark the mowing area in a phone app.

A robot will definitely be useful if:

  • you have a lawn of at least a few hundred square metres that needs regular mowing;
  • you'd rather spend your weekends doing something other than pushing a mower;
  • you're often away from home (work, travel, a summer house);
  • you want your lawn to look even and well kept all season;
  • someone in your household finds mowing physically difficult.

Maybe it's not for you if:

  • your lawn is very small (a few dozen square metres is quicker to mow with a push mower);
  • the grass grows on a very steep slope that exceeds the robot's maximum incline;
  • the area is full of obstacles, roots and bumps that you don't plan to deal with;
  • you enjoy mowing yourself and find it relaxing.

What to consider before buying

Lawn size. Choose a robot rated for a slightly larger area than your lawn. That way it has some reserve and doesn't work at its limit.

Slope and terrain. Check what gradients the robot can handle. In countryside properties and hilly gardens, this matters more than you might think.

Wired or wire-free. Wire-free models are easier to set up and simple to reconfigure if something in your garden changes. Wired models are usually cheaper, but installation takes more work.

Local service. A robot mower is a machine that works outdoors all season. It's worth buying from a seller who provides warranty, spare parts and service right here in Latvia, rather than shipping the device abroad.

App and security. Make sure the robot can be controlled from your phone, has a PIN code or anti-theft protection, and stops when lifted.

How much time does it really save?

If mowing an average-sized lawn takes an hour or two a week, that adds up to dozens of hours over a season. The robot gives that time back to you. All that's left is to clean the blades now and then, check that nothing has been left on the lawn, and prepare the robot for winter in autumn.

How to prepare the robot for winter

In the Latvian climate, it's recommended to clean the robot, charge the battery and store it in a dry, warm place such as a basement or garage over winter. In spring it's ready to go straight away.

Conclusion

If you have a lawn that needs regular mowing and want your free days back, a robotic lawn mower is one of the most practical purchases for your garden. The key is to choose a model that suits your lawn size and terrain, and to buy from a seller who provides service in Latvia.
