Used to eliminate the dead zone when measuring routes using an OTDR. By pre-connecting a long segment, the user is able to accurately read the beginning of the actual measured route on the OTDR, and thus precisely determine the location of a fault. Similarly, by inserting it at the end of the measured route, uncertainty in determining the route length due to an undefined termination is eliminated (i.e., if there is a loose connector at the end of the route, you may receive several types of responses and are unable to accurately determine the route length).
